Karuppu, a film by R.J Balaji
Summary of the story is unnecessary here, nor I am a film critic. I would like to register my view as an advocate or as a thinker on behalf of society.
Director Balaji's film Karuppu is not a legal courtroom drama. Karuppu is a magical fantasy with myth and religious bonding.
In short karrupu is an experiment between corruption and justice. The chosen area of practice to conduct this experiment is a courtroom. Corruption is lead by "Baby Kannan" and Justice is said to be lead by a lawyer (an avatar of Karuppu). Director has thought about the magical fantasy and myth that can overpower a human abilities and thus in the film itself asks Baby Kannan to perform his (Surya) practice within the abilities as a human.
In the second half, there will be a trial of a sexual harassment case. Where, the counsel for accused again "magically" starts spitting out facts instead of his usual lies and the prosecution wins. Starting from there, all cases are won for justice just because some "magical" element is controlling the evil in the city such as bribery and lies. This practice which was about to be conducted within the ability of the human is also falls in need of 6-7 inhuman fight scenes.
I don't find any sense in his second half especially, just before that when Baby Kannan the counsel whom uses corruption as a tool to get his favourable orders challenges the god to practice in uncorrupted way to get justice. The second half is as equally illogical as the first half. However, Director assumes that "fear to god" can be a tool for justice and to overcome corruption.
I really don't understand how fear to god can stop injustices from happening. If fear of god can stop a person from taking or giving bribes, Can fear to god settle debts? Can fear to god improvise infrastructures? Can fear to god can bring in job opportunities? Can fear of god feed chidlren? Logical reasoning lacks in this film. The experiment between corruption and fear to god takes back to basic question Whether blind faith is sustainable for future without logical reasoning?
The director previous approach in Mookuthi Amman was atleast entertaining, where real faith fights with illusionary faiths. The approach atleast helped the public to be awakened from real faith and cheaters. Karuppu could have been better if engineering of human way of practice with faith as a combined tool to overcome corruption. Without logical reasoning, lets keep Karuppu as a one time, "timepass" movie.
