Directed by Barbet Schroeder, story adapted from the 1985 book Reversal of Fortune: Inside the von Bülow Case, written by law professor Alan Dershowitz.
The literal meaning for Reversal of Fortune is 1. the act or an instance of reversing. 2 a change for the worse; reverse. a reversal of fortune. 3 the state of being reversed. In this case, the fortune of Mrs Sunny (the extremely wealthy wife) (On the left of this above poster).
This story (based on a true story) is about the mystery of Mrs Sunny falling into a coma, still unsolved if I can give some spoilers. This is one technique I found, to keep the story more interesting. Until the end, the director nor the writer discloses how exactly Mrs Sunny fell into a coma. On the other side, Mr Claus is trying to escape from the verdict of him guilty of the attempted murder of injecting her wife with insulin injection.
The movie starts with the voice of Mrs Sunny (currently in a coma) on what we can expect for the next two hours. This detail itself caught my attention.
Now the issue was, who injected a person with hypoglycemia with insulin?
HYPOGLYCEMIA: A person with low blood sugar
INSULIN: Functions to carry glucose from the liver to cells in the body since the pancreas is out of order.
So logically, if someone injects insulin with a person with hypoglycemia, you're basically killing the patient. However, the case does not go that simple, remember the client (Mr Claus) now wants to be acquitted from this case at US Supreme Court.
I was really impressed by the screenplay of this movie, I thoroughly enjoyed the minor details.
If you can zoom in this picture above, there are three books, I could only read the first and second book from the bottom. The First was China's Long March a book about The Long March was a military retreat undertaken by the Red Army of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).
The book in the middle is Monet. Claude Monet was a french modernist painter.
In this picture, you can see a woman standing full of hesitation of leaving the room. This is because in the early scene she would stand up against the defending counsel (Mr Dershowitz) saying this case is highly ridiculous and the professor is acting immorally for Mr.Clans who is per se guilty. He explains to this woman, that this case is not just about simple moral superiority but, the class of the legal system and the way of the 'rich' not following the correct way of going to the police for a case, instead of digging up evidence with private investigations. If the court allows this practice, (the panel has no other way) , the next case may not be a rich man, he might have to lose his ground, even if he is innocent.
After Mr Dershowitz claims his points, he casually begins to divide the workload among his students. This is where is an exact scene I've captured is happening. All these words I've typed out were beautifully portrayed in a few seconds. Did I mention I liked the screenplay before?
Now, this is a tricky one. Throughout the film, there is a painting behind the actors, this is one of them. Most probably have some connection to the current scene. I tried using google lens to find the definition of the picture, however, I could find the exact dining picture, I wish I had a Jew friend who can explain it to me.
This is the last joke in the movie. I hope you get it. (A final scene where Mr Claus goes to a pharmacy after the trial. See the news papers on the right)
On a personal note, I may rewatch this movie. This is simply because of the commercial value the films adopt. Criminal Law. Most novels, dramas and films are based on criminal law. In the industry, movies with nasty people's stories are profitable. I may rewatch it if I am burned out with civil procedures.
I might also rewatch the movie because it showed me how to coup up with self rational thoughts and the world (work). There is a line in the movie "I gotta feel a moral/constitutional issue at stake to take your case." He still take the case and calls it his Hitler Dream, Where you takes the case for Hitler then kill him. I did mention the counsel was a jew.
Thanks for reading.
